THE HIRO DRONE
Dr. Italo Subbarao, associate dean of preclinical
sciences at the William Carey University College of
Osteopathic Medicine, and Guy Paul Cooper Jr., a
Carey medical student, are working to develop the
HiRO (Health Integrated Rescue Operations) drone,
a fully equipped medical multirotor that can deliver
emergency care to people in need , according to a
press release.
HiRO is designed to integrate into the local 911
system, enabling an on-call physician to respond
to various emergency medical situations. When
a call is placed to 911, a UAS is dispatched to
deliver the kit. Through the drone, the physician
can actually see the patient and even provide
instructions on how to use the equipment found
in the kit.
The prototype, a modified DJI S1000+,
can carry up to 20 lbs.

"The early adopters are there. I know colleagues who are testing these
solutions on their own," Tucker said. "Early adopters are out there trying to
work with these solutions but there are barriers. Some people are just reluc-
tant. They're reluctant to spend money on new technology because they're
wondering what the cost is going to be and they're worried about making a
business case for it because of the regulations. The FAA has been the biggest
barrier, but that is starting to change."
The prototype MasterFlight Inc. is working
on for RAM. The non-profit hopes to use it to
deliver medical supplies to those in need.
