The Gimball from Flyability
inspired by insects
Gimball, from the Switzerland-based Flyability, is
described as a collision tolerant drone. Rather than
avoiding obstacles, this drone actually uses them while
f ying and has the ability to go just about anywhere without
crashing. The lightweight drone features a protective cage
and can be used for a variety of applications, including
industrial inspection, search and rescue, and security.
So how does it work? The team at Flyability spent f ve
years developing Gimball's patented rotating protective
frame and f ight control algorithms at EPFL in Switzerland,
according to the company website. Inspired by the
behavior of insects, like f ies, Gimball is designed to easily
recover after encountering an obstacle. The Gimball simply
bounces and then continues f ying without disruption.
